What is the difference between an absence, leave and an exit slip?
- Leave is planned and may be deducted from a balance. See leave management.
- An absence covers one or more unplanned days: illness, workplace accident, authorized or unauthorized absence.
- An exit slip covers a few hours within a working day.
All of them go through the same approval workflow and are taken into account in the hours calculation.
How does TEMPO detect an absence?
A scheduled employee with no punch, leave or approved absence is absent. The daily email report and the dashboard show it to managers.
Lateness or a missing clock-out creates an attendance anomaly, justified in one click with an exit slip or an absence already filled in.
Which types of absence can you track?
You start with these types, which you can rename or add to, with or without a required supporting document.
Sick note
The certificate is attached as a photo or PDF, from the phone.
Workplace accident
Days off work are tracked separately.
Authorized absence
Accepted by the company, it can count as worked.
Unauthorized absence
Declared so it is recorded and sent to payroll.
How do you declare an absence and get it approved?
- 1
Enter the dates
The employee declares their absence from the employee portal, or a manager enters it.
- 2
Check the summary
Public holidays and rest days are removed automatically.
- 3
Attach the document
A certificate or a statement, as a PDF or photo.
- 4
Approve
The request follows its workflow, and attendance is recalculated.
How does an exit slip work?
An exit slip lets an employee leave their post for a few hours, with an exit time and, if they come back, a return time. You choose whether it is counted as worked or not.
Example: an employee scheduled from 9 am to 5 pm leaves from 11 am to 12 pm with a counted slip: their day counts 8 normal hours.

How do you manage employee absences without Excel?
In TEMPO, absences are detected from the schedule and punches, declared by the employee or their manager, justified with an attached certificate and approved through a workflow. The period’s activity statement then adds up absence days by type and unauthorized absences, ready for payroll, with no re-keying.
What is an exit slip?
An exit slip is the permission given to an employee to leave their post for a few hours of a working day, with an exit time and, if they come back, a return time. In TEMPO, it is approved like a request, and you choose whether it counts as time worked or not.
Can an employee send their medical certificate from their phone?
Yes. From the TEMPO employee portal, the employee declares a sick absence and attaches their certificate as a photo or PDF. The request goes for approval, and the document stays attached to the absence, viewable only by people authorized to see it.
Is an authorized absence paid?
It depends on your policy and the law that applies to each case. TEMPO lets HR decide, day by day, whether an absence counts as worked. A counted day is credited in normal hours; a day not counted appears as an absence in the activity statement sent to payroll.
